Violations/Heating & HVAC
On your notice it reads
Heat unit adequately

Failure to heat, or an unapproved heating device

A heat-season citation. Chicago enforces minimum temperatures hard from mid-September to the start of June, and these notices almost always begin with a tenant call.

The short answers
Do I need a permit?
This may need a permit, depending on scope. We will tell you which.
Who actually does it?
Our licensed partner, run on our permit and our schedule, billed on our contract.
Am I unusual?
Not at all. This is one of the items we are called out for most, and it is rarely the only thing on the notice.

What the inspector was looking at

A unit below the required temperature. A heating plant not running. Space heaters standing in as primary heat. Venting that is not right.

What happens if you leave it

Heat cases move faster than any other kind, and they carry the most exposure. This is not one to schedule around.

How we get it closed

  1. 1Our licensed HVAC partner restores heat first, before anything else on the list
  2. 2Unapproved devices removed and proper heat provided
  3. 3Venting and combustion air corrected
  4. 4Re-inspection booked immediately, before the case escalates

Before you start worrying about the cost

Call us the day you get a heat citation. We treat these as emergencies because the City does.

This is almost never the only item

Chicago inspectors write up everything they can see in one visit. Fixing this and leaving the rest means the case stays open and you go to the hearing anyway. We price and clear the whole notice: our own crews on nearly all of it, licensed partners on the plumbing, heating and electrical items, and nothing left dangling for you to chase.

Usually on the same notice

If you see any of these on yours too, that is the normal pattern rather than bad luck. They tend to share a cause.
